Setting Stones

“In the midst of the winter solstice, we seek solace in a place nestled within the heart of the mountain city. Here, time flows differently, guided by a logic of its own. Unaware of the passing seasons, lost in the ever-shifting dimensions, only to be awakened by the pungent scent that lingers in the air. We partake in the act of setting stone, escaping the world’s weight from playful flair.” 

 

Yrellag Gallery is proud to present “Setting Stone”, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Maggie Chu. The idea of “Setting Stone” originated from the historic stair in Prince’s Terrace, gazing at Central with a century flies. Chu envisions a realm existing simultaneously at different junctures in time, where the familiar shape-shifts into the unfamiliar. 

 

This exhibition comprises photography documentation, along with a series of sculptures forged from the historic stairs of Prince's Terrace. The moulded sculptures are visible traces of the events that once took place and crafted akin to stone gargoyles. When removed from their original context, they retain the imprints of the Prince's Terrace steps once adorned, but exist as ethereal entities in a surreal landscape. 

 

Maggie Chu has been an architect for years. Her works akin to unlocking treasure troves. She explores various facets of personal and place identities in contemporary life through the use of diverse media and repurposed found objects. 

 

The exhibition opening will be held on 9 December 2023 (Saturday), from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will be on view until 25 December 2023. The artist will be present during the opening.

  「冬至之際，我們藏身於山城中一處隱蔽之地。在這裡，時間以自身的邏輯流轉。置身於不斷變幻的時空中，沒有察覺原來冬天已經漸漸消逝，只有被纏繞在空氣中的氨臭味所驚醒。我們時而靜觀玩石，時而發白日夢，時而閒談無聊。」

 

 Yrellag Gallery 榮幸呈獻香港藝術家朱頌琪個展《立石》，想像時間的流轉，熟悉的事物可能轉瞬成陌生，就像《桃花源記》中有著不同的時間流。展覽源於太子臺附近一條歷史悠久的階梯，歷經百年，看盡中環的星移物換，太子臺階自成寧靜的一角。藝術家以倒模和攝影紀錄太子臺階所發生的、而演變成玩石雕塑安置於地景中，喚起一種介乎現實和想像之間的遊離。 

 

朱頌琪從事建築師多年，她的作品猶如一場尋寶探查，運用多種媒介和現成物，找尋當代生活中個人和地方身份的各個面向。 

 

本展將於 2023 年 12 月 9 日（星期六）下午 5 時至晚上 7 時舉行開幕酒會，屆時藝術家將親臨現場，展期由 2023 年 12 月 7 日至 2023 年 12 月 25 日。
