Nourishing Gratitudes

Yrellag Gallery and Comme Chan Studio are honored to present Comme Chan's solo exhibition Part I – ‘Nourishing Gratitudes’ during the Grains Rain ("Gu Yu": 穀雨).

 

The Grains Rain ("Gu Yu": 穀雨) is one of the twenty-four solar periods of the Chinese calendar, which heralds the blossoming of all flowers and green plants that, together with the sun, form the protective shield for our soils. Chan hopes that the beauty shared in this exhibition shed light on ideals, wishes, and aesthetics ---to nourish our soul to live courageously and to be grateful and comforted by the endless journey of appreciation.

 

This exhibition features Chan's realistic-style oil paintings and is also the prelude of Chan's solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Center this May. Paintings presented in this exhibition Part I – ‘Nourishing Gratitudes’ are reflective practice that remind the artist of inspirational lessons from her memories and sentimental experiences in life.

 

Chan believes that art is a process of storytelling, and that each person has their own story. To Chan, painting is a therapeutic process that reflected her sentiments living through the death of her husband and raising her daughter alone. 

 

Under Chan's observation of her life experience, integrating light and shadow in her paintings with the natural landscape and still life objects, the artist's heart and mind resonates in her works, and the shadows in the paintings are also a way to see beauty with depth and foil. 

 

The observation of the here and now encompasses the harshness of loss, the happiness of giving, the excitement of the unknown, the sweetness of kindness - encounters sealed not only by pain, but the warmth of tenderness also fulfilled in the latest moments of Chan's life.

 

The exhibition will run from 5 March to 31 March. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on 10 March from 5pm to 8pm. The artist will be present at the opening. An artist sharing session and live music performance will be held on 25 March from 5pm to 9pm.

好雨知時節。春天來去轉眼間，經歷年輕和成長故事各有不同。陳氏用眸裡境況在畫中反映人生不同的風景，發覺即使偶有風雨或難關，都是人生的禮物。作品是她滋養心靈的泉源。

 

這次展覽將會展出陳氏的寫實風格油畫作品，亦是陳氏將於今年五月在香港視覺藝術中心舉行個人展覽的前奏（第一部曲），陳氏認為藝術就是說故事的過程，每個人都有其獨特故事，而她自己就在創作過程中不自覺投放了喪夫後獨自照顧家庭的情感。

 

每段經歷在陳氏的觀察下都成了創作靈感，那些畫中的光影與主體的塑造融入自然風景中，映照了藝術家心裡的風光明媚，而畫中陰影更是一種深度和襯托。

 

花開念穀雨。晨曦照下，壤土跟養分相互守護着對方，園地存着願景而美滿。陳氏寄望畫作能令觀者心存一份溫暖與欣慰，潤澤心靈，勇敢生活。

 

本展將於 2023 年 3 月 10 日下午 5 時至晚上 8 時舉行開幕酒會，展期由 2023 年 3 月 5 日至 2023 年 3 月 31 日。藝術家將會出席開幕禮和 於 3月25日下午6時至9時舉行的藝術家分享會與現場樂器演奏。
